Share the Word: People are instinctively led to divide humankind into two groups: the good and the wicked, the friends and the enemies. The tragic consequence of such a distinction is intolerance and the desire to solve rapidly and violently the tensions arising from them. The demand for instant judgement, for rooting out those who have done harm in the community, for bringing the last judgement in to the present tense, is something that is seriously challenged in today's scripture. The author of Wisdom tries to answer these pressing concerns: why does God allow evil to flourish? Why is God so patient and moderate with our enemies? Wisdom responds that God's moderation is not a result of weakness. His justice has its source in strength. He disposes his strength in favour of dealing with us mercifully. God's love as well as mercy is universal and inclusive. We are invited to share in the same spirit of God and deal kindly with our fellow human beings.

Share the Word: There is a constant presence and work of God in our lives, though we often have difficulty recognizing it or perceiving its presence. Though we may appear to be the sole authors of our actions, our free decisions and actions are really a response, positive or negative, to God's initiative of love. Traditional theology distinguishes between sanctifying grace (the permanent presence of the Holy Trinity within the person who freely accepts and maintains himself open to it) and actual grace (the particular instances in which the person is moved, in freedom, towards God). We should not think of grace as mere ointment for the soul. God himself surrounds us with his Presence and his creation, excites and moves us. We experience his presence and personal approach to us in what we call grace. We tend to misunderstand necessary suffering in our lives (there is also unnecessary suffering). This is, in part, due to an idea of earthly life as our only possession, to be preserved at any cost. Faith shows us that this is not the case, and also many visible signs. St. Paul reminds us that suffering is not only inevitable, but necessary. It is a process of transformation, the integral development of a person through a process of opening to the presence of God and to others. We all necessarily undergo this process, though the harvest of its effects depends on our cooperation.

Share the Word: At the centre of Christianity is an inner experience of God's presence, an experience that affects our minds and hearts, our thoughts, desires and affections. While still necessarily concerned with the daily tasks of this life, there is a greater concern and desire for the experience of God's life, both now and after death. This gives a deeper meaning to all things in life and enables us, through our work, to understand the value and meaning of all things relative to God. This does not mean a rejection of God's creation, as some have thought, leading to a caricature of Christianity, an exaggerated asceticism and a disregard for this world's affairs. Rather it is the correct appreciation and ordering of all things towards their purpose in God. It is here and now that we are to build the Kingdom, in ourselves and in the world, even if the definitive experience of the Kingdom is beyond death. The Christian must get involved in the world with a passion, and seek the necessary wisdom to find and establish God's order in all things. We tend to misinterpret these virtues to mean a self effacing attitude of one who lets everything go by him. This is not meekness, nor is it Christian virtue.

Share the Word
There is a constant temptation to reduce Christianity to its doctrinal forms. Clear and orthodox doctrine is necessary, but Christianity is not just a set of truths, a guaranteed formula for living. It is above all the experience of God's life within us. Baptism is a commitment, but it is, above all, the experience of the reality of God's life in the human spirit. The Gospels refer to this experience by comparing it to a treasure or a fine pearl, something for which we willingly sacrifice everything else.
The Gospel reminds us of whom and what to fear. There is a possibility of losing our way and sense of purpose in this life, of not responding in an adequate way to God's initiative of love. This can happen through deliberate choice or through distraction. There is an angelic presence, Satan that seeks our spiritual ruin, that tries to distort the inner harmony and the purpose of our lives. We are taught that, although we are tempted, the choices in life are always ours. Hell exists because there are those who have chosen not to want eternal life. This is the real dimension, responsibility, and risk of our earthly life.
